THE ROW THAT WROTE ITS OWN BOARDROOM SCENE
Lord Alan Sugar has spent two decades telling hopeful entrepreneurs that business rewards clarity, competence and results. This week, the 79-year-old Apprentice star found himself on the other side of a decision: American Express refused his request for a higher credit-card limit, even after he reached a UK representative who, he said, knew who he was and understood his financial standing.
According to Sugar’s account on X, the call lasted an hour and passed through four people before the answer remained no, apparently because of “their system”. The detail transformed an ordinary piece of customer-service friction into irresistible public theatre. Here was one of Britain’s most recognisable billionaires being overruled not by a rival tycoon, but by a lending model.
“A BUNCH OF IDIOTS”
Sugar did not leave his frustration in a private complaints queue. When followers accused him of moaning and expecting special treatment, he insisted that he was exposing what he called “a bunch of idiots” at Amex. Asked why a billionaire needed credit at all, he fired back that he did not walk around with “bags full of cash” and needed a credit card to buy things.
The exchanges were pure Sugar: combative, blunt and written in capital letters. Even a follower correcting the grammar in his original post received a sarcastic reply. The episode quickly became larger than the limit request itself. It turned into a referendum on privilege, automation and whether fame should matter when a financial institution applies its rules.
THE PUBLIC WAS NOT ENTIRELY SYMPATHETIC
Some users treated the complaint as comic relief. Others argued that ordinary customers are rejected by automated systems every day without access to a vast online audience. One response accused Sugar of expecting “royal treatment” while drawing attention to his council-estate beginnings and present wealth.
The contrast was sharp: a self-made businessman celebrated for straight talking appeared astonished that a standard process would not bend after recognising his name.
Yet the criticism missed part of his point. A credit card is not necessarily a sign that its holder lacks cash. It can provide convenience, fraud controls, purchase protections and rewards, while allowing spending to be consolidated. Wealth is also not the same thing as money sitting idle in a current account; fortunes can be held in businesses, property and other assets.
WHY A BILLIONAIRE CAN STILL HEAR “NO”
The refusal was less mysterious than it first appeared. American Express says requests for a higher UK credit-card limit are subject to approval and that it assesses capacity to repay using information such as credit history, credit reports and income.
The company’s guidance also distinguishes a credit card, which has a set limit, from a charge card, whose spending power can vary according to spending patterns, payment history, credit record and financial resources.
UK rules help explain why recognition alone cannot settle the question. The Financial Conduct Authority requires a reasonable creditworthiness assessment before a lender significantly increases a credit limit. A human representative may know that a customer is wealthy, but still be unable to override the information, thresholds or controls attached to a regulated decision. Celebrity is not a field on an affordability model.
That does not make every automated decision correct. Models can be rigid, incomplete or poorly explained. High-net-worth customers may have irregular income or asset-heavy finances that fit badly into standard categories.
Sugar’s complaint struck a nerve because many consumers know the circular frustration of being told that a person understands the problem but “the system” will not permit a solution.
THE SUGAR STORY BEHIND THE OUTBURST
The force of the reaction makes more sense in the context of Sugar’s career. Born in Hackney and raised in a council flat, he left school at 16, briefly worked as a civil-service statistician and founded Amstrad in 1968.
The company grew by selling affordable consumer electronics, later becoming known for home computers and satellite equipment. In 2007, he sold his remaining Amstrad interest to BSkyB for £125 million.
He also served as chairman of Tottenham Hotspur and built extensive property interests through Amsprop. Since 2005, The Apprentice has turned his impatience with muddled thinking into a television persona.
The Sunday Times Rich List placed him 146th in 2026 with an estimated fortune of £1.138 billion. For a businessman whose public identity rests on getting decisions made, an unexplained systems refusal was almost designed to provoke him.
THEN CAME THE REVERSAL
The story did not end with the rejection. In a later post, Sugar announced: “Good news Amex have now increased my credit limit.”
The change supplied a perfect final scene. The computer had said no; the public complaint went viral; the answer became yes.
What happened behind the scenes has not been publicly detailed, and it would be wrong to assume that the company abandoned its checks. The case may have been reviewed, new information may have been considered, or an internal route may have produced a different outcome. At the time of the first reports, American Express had been approached for comment.
WHO WON?
Sugar got the result he wanted, so on the narrow question of the credit limit he can claim victory. Amex, however, also demonstrated why financial firms build systems that do not simply accept celebrity as proof.
The episode is more revealing than either side’s slogan: responsible lending requires controls, but customer service fails when nobody can explain or intelligently review what those controls produce.
There is a final irony worthy of The Apprentice. Sugar’s outrage was criticised as entitled, yet it exposed a familiar weakness in corporate life—the gap between human judgement and automated authority.
Amex eventually increased the limit, but the damage to the customer experience had already become a headline. In business, as Sugar so often reminds his candidates, process matters; results matter more; and communication decides how the world judges both. Angkor Wat was built during the first half of the 12th century under King Suryavarman II, one of the most powerful rulers of the Khmer Empire.
The king dedicated this monumental temple to Lord Vishnu, the Hindu deity associated with preservation, protection and cosmic order.
Most major Khmer temples were traditionally dedicated to Shiva, making Suryavarman II’s devotion to Vishnu particularly significant. Angkor Wat was therefore designed not only as a royal temple but also as a magnificent earthly home for the divine presence of Lord Vishnu.
Its original name is believed to have been “Vrah Vishnuloka,” meaning the Sacred Dwelling of Vishnu.
The construction of such an immense complex required remarkable planning, engineering and human effort. Vast quantities of sandstone were quarried, transported and fitted together with astonishing precision. Thousands of labourers, engineers, stonecutters, sculptors and artisans would have contributed to its creation.
Even today, the achievement remains breathtaking.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">A TEMPLE DESIGNED AS THE HINDU UNIVERSE</h2>
Every major part of Angkor Wat carries spiritual meaning.
The five central towers represent the five peaks of Mount Meru—the sacred mountain believed in Hindu tradition to stand at the centre of the universe and to serve as the dwelling place of the gods.
The surrounding galleries represent mountain ranges, while the enormous moat symbolises the cosmic ocean encircling the world.
Visitors approaching the temple cross a long stone causeway over the water. With every step, the towers appear to rise higher and become more imposing. The journey towards the centre of Angkor Wat was designed to feel like a spiritual ascent—from the human world towards the divine.
Unlike most Khmer temples, Angkor Wat faces west. The reason for this unusual orientation continues to inspire discussion. Some scholars connect it with Lord Vishnu, who is traditionally associated with the west. Others believe the orientation may also reflect the temple’s possible role as a royal funerary monument for Suryavarman II.
Whatever its full purpose, the design of Angkor Wat was deliberate, symbolic and deeply sacred.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">WALLS THAT TELL EPIC STORIES</h2>
The long stone galleries of Angkor Wat contain some of the most magnificent bas-reliefs ever created.
Across the walls, ancient sculptors carved great scenes from Hindu mythology and Khmer history. These include episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, royal processions, heavenly beings, warriors, animals and scenes of judgement in the afterlife.
One of the most celebrated carvings depicts the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
In this famous Hindu story, gods and demons work together to churn the cosmic ocean in search of amrita—the nectar of immortality. Using the great serpent Vasuki as a rope, they pull back and forth around Mount Mandara until divine treasures emerge from the ocean.
The scene stretches dramatically across the gallery wall, filled with movement, symbolism and extraordinary detail.
Thousands of celestial dancers known as apsaras also appear throughout the temple. Each figure is delicately carved, with distinctive jewellery, hairstyles, clothing and expressions. Together they give Angkor Wat an atmosphere of grace, beauty and divine celebration.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">FROM HINDU TEMPLE TO BUDDHIST SANCTUARY</h2>
Although Angkor Wat was originally dedicated to Lord Vishnu, its spiritual story did not end with the decline of the Khmer Empire.
Over the centuries, the temple gradually became an important centre of Buddhist worship. Unlike many other ancient monuments that were completely abandoned, Angkor Wat remained an active sacred place.
Hindu and Buddhist traditions now form different layers of its remarkable history.
This continuity helped preserve the temple through centuries of political change, conflict and environmental challenges. Monks, worshippers, local communities, conservators and archaeologists have all played a part in keeping its sacred legacy alive.

THE MESSAGE — AND THE NECESSARY PRECISION
The central truth is undeniable: Africans lived, created, governed, traded and remembered for many thousands of years before modern European colonial rule. Many ancient African populations had darkly pigmented skin, and African hair has always included a broad range of tightly curled, coiled and wavy forms. These features are indigenous human variation, not evidence of a late outside arrival.
But a strong message becomes stronger when it is exact. Africa is the world’s most genetically diverse continent. “Black” is a powerful modern social and political identity, not a single scientific label that every ancient person would have used. Ancient Africa included many populations, environments and appearances. No responsible history should replace an old stereotype with a new uniform picture.
DARK SKIN IS ANCIENT; EUROPE IS NOT THE STARTING POINT
Modern humans originated in Africa, and the evolution of skin pigmentation is closely tied to ultraviolet radiation. Research by Nina Jablonski and George Chaplin explains dark constitutive pigmentation as an adaptation in regions of strong UV exposure. Lighter pigmentation evolved through multiple genetic pathways as populations moved into different environments; it is not an ancestral standard from which Africans later diverged.
Ancient DNA adds detail without reducing the continent to one story. Genomic studies of ancient southern, eastern, central, western and northern Africans reveal deep population structure, long periods of regional continuity and repeated movements across landscapes. A 2017 study of ancient southern African genomes pushed estimates for some modern human population divergences far back into deep time. Later work has continued to show complex connections among African regions and, at different periods, with populations beyond the continent.
WHAT CAN WE REALLY SAY ABOUT HAIR?
Hair texture is part of Africa’s visible diversity, but it is difficult to reconstruct from most ancient remains. Hair and skin rarely survive; artistic images can be stylised; and genetic prediction has limits, especially when reference data are uneven. Archaeology may preserve combs, ornaments, fibres, braiding tools or occasional human hair, while sculpture and painting can show how particular societies represented hairstyles and status.
The safest conclusion is not that all ancient Africans had one texture. It is that curls, coils and waves existed in Africa long before colonial contact, just as they do across African populations today. Hair carried practical, social, spiritual and aesthetic meaning. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture notes that Black hair remains central to identity even as post-colonial beauty standards have subjected it to scrutiny.
AFRICA BEFORE COLONIAL CONQUEST
Long before the nineteenth-century Scramble for Africa, the continent contained urban centres, kingdoms, empires, farming communities, pastoral societies, trading networks and intellectual traditions.
Ancient Egypt and Nubia belonged to the Nile Valley’s African history. Aksum linked the Horn of Africa to the Red Sea world. Across the Sahel and West Africa, later states such as Ghana, Mali and Songhai organised power and trade on a vast scale. Great Zimbabwe’s stone architecture testified to political authority and regional exchange in southern Africa.
These societies were never sealed off. Africa had contact with the Mediterranean, Arabia, Asia and Europe across many centuries. So the phrase “before Europeans arrived” is best understood as “before European colonial domination,” not as a claim that no European traveller, merchant or migrant had ever reached Africa.
Connection is not the same as creation: outside contact did not invent African civilisation or African identity.
HOW HISTORY WAS NARROWED
Colonial power did more than seize land. It also classified people, privileged written European archives over African oral traditions, removed objects, renamed places and treated African societies as if they had no history worth knowing. Some scholars challenged those ideas early, but the hierarchy remained embedded in museums, textbooks and popular culture.
UNESCO launched its General History of Africa project in 1964 as African nations gained independence. Led by a predominantly African scientific committee and involving hundreds of specialists, it drew together archaeology, oral tradition, linguistics, art history and written sources.
Its purpose was not to exchange evidence for pride, but to replace colonial distortion with a fuller, plural and African-centred account.
RECOVERING TRUTH WITHOUT CREATING MYTH
Correcting erasure requires care. A viral image can open a door, but it should not be mistaken for proof. A face generated today cannot tell us exactly how one person looked three thousand years ago. A sculpture may represent an ideal rather than an individual. A genetic result from one burial cannot stand for an entire civilisation. Good history compares many forms of evidence and states clearly where certainty ends.
That discipline does not weaken the message. It protects it.
The evidence supports a profound conclusion: African peoples possess deep indigenous histories, dark pigmentation is ancient, hair diversity long predates colonialism, and African civilisations were active makers of the world. The continent’s past does not need invention to be extraordinary.
HISTORY CAN CHANGE; ROOTS REMAIN
Our understanding of history changes because new evidence appears and old assumptions are challenged. Ancient DNA, archaeology, oral histories and the restoration of African scholarship are reshaping what classrooms and museums can say.
That is not history becoming unreliable. It is knowledge becoming more accountable.
The roots remain in languages, family memory, art, food, spirituality, place names, technologies and the bodies of living people. They also remain in the insistence that Africa be studied as a continent of many histories, not a blank space waiting for outsiders.
Pride and precision belong together. When they do, the truth becomes harder to hide again. Ancient, powerful and seemingly without end, it has witnessed almost the entire history of our planet. Continents have risen and broken apart beneath its gaze. Species have appeared, flourished and vanished within its depths. Civilisations have sailed across it, depended upon it and feared its immense power.
The Ocean is not merely a body of water.
It is the great regulator of Earth, the cradle of life and the living force that helped transform a violent young planet into the blue world we know today.

<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">WHEN EARTH WAS A WORLD OF FIRE</h2>
Earth formed approximately 4.54 billion years ago from dust, rock and debris orbiting the young Sun.
The newborn planet was almost unrecognisable. Its surface was intensely hot, volcanic and repeatedly struck by asteroids and other objects left over from the formation of the Solar System.
There were no blue seas, green forests or living creatures.
There was only fire, molten rock, poisonous gases and an atmosphere filled with water vapour.
As the planet gradually cooled, enormous quantities of steam released by volcanic activity began condensing in the atmosphere. Rain may have fallen over immense periods, collecting within the lowest regions of Earth’s early crust.
Some of Earth’s water may also have arrived within water-bearing asteroids and other ancient Solar System material. Scientists continue to debate exactly how much came from Earth’s interior and how much was delivered from space.
The Ocean was therefore not born in one single dramatic moment.
It emerged slowly—from vapour, rain, volcanic gases, cooling rock and cosmic material—until water began gathering across the surface of the young Earth.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">THE FIRST OCEANS</h2>
Tiny zircon crystals discovered in Western Australia provide some of the earliest surviving clues.
Their chemical composition suggests that liquid water may already have existed at Earth’s surface approximately 4.3 to 4.4 billion years ago, only a relatively short time after the planet itself was formed.
These ancient oceans would have looked very different from the seas of today.
The young Sun was fainter. Volcanoes were widespread. Continents were small or only beginning to form. Asteroid impacts remained frequent, and the atmosphere contained little or no free oxygen.
Yet water endured.
It filled deep basins, reacted with the crust, carried minerals across the planet and created an environment in which the chemistry of life could eventually begin.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">WHEN THE OCEAN CAME TO LIFE</h2>
At some point more than 3.5 billion years ago, the Ocean ceased to be only water, minerals and chemistry.
Life appeared.
The first organisms were not fish, plants or animals. They were microscopic forms of life—simple cells capable of surviving in the ancient seas.
The precise place where life began remains one of science’s greatest unanswered questions. Possible environments include hydrothermal vents on the seabed, shallow coastal pools, hot springs, sea ice and other water-rich settings. No single birthplace has yet been conclusively proven.
Deep-sea hydrothermal vents remain one particularly compelling possibility. These underwater systems provide heat, minerals and chemical energy—ingredients that may have helped the earliest biological reactions develop.
Whatever the exact location, water was essential.
Every known living organism requires it.
The Ocean became the first great nursery of life on Earth.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">THE OCEAN CHANGED THE ATMOSPHERE</h2>
For billions of years, microscopic marine organisms ruled the planet.
Among the most important were photosynthetic microbes capable of using sunlight to produce energy. As a by-product, they released oxygen.
Over immense periods, this oxygen accumulated in the oceans and atmosphere, fundamentally transforming Earth.
The process helped make complex life possible.
The oxygen we breathe today is therefore connected to an ancient biological revolution that began largely within the sea.
Even now, microscopic marine organisms known collectively as phytoplankton remain central to the planet’s oxygen, carbon and food cycles.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">THE GREAT EXPLOSION OF MARINE LIFE</h2>
Around 541 million years ago, the fossil record reveals an extraordinary diversification of animal life known as the Cambrian Explosion.
The seas became populated by increasingly complex creatures—trilobites, early arthropods, sponges, worms and predators unlike anything that had existed before.
Later came corals, armoured fishes, sharks and immense marine ecosystems.
During the age of the dinosaurs, giant marine reptiles—including ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and mosasaurs—ruled portions of the seas.
Long after the non-avian dinosaurs disappeared, mammals returned to the water. Over millions of years, land-dwelling ancestors evolved into whales, dolphins and other marine mammals.
The Ocean had become home to some of the smallest and largest organisms ever to exist.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">THE OCEAN AND THE MOVEMENT OF CONTINENTS</h2>
The Ocean has never remained still.
Its basins have opened and closed as tectonic plates moved across Earth’s surface.
Ancient supercontinents formed, fractured and drifted apart. New seas emerged between separating landmasses, while older oceans disappeared beneath continents through geological processes known as subduction.
The Atlantic Ocean began opening as the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart roughly 200 million years ago.
The shape of the world map is therefore temporary.
Millions of years from now, today’s oceans and continents will occupy entirely different positions.
<h2 style="color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-transform: none;">THE OCEAN THAT RULES THE CLIMATE</h2>
Today, the Ocean covers approximately 71 per cent of Earth’s surface and contains around 96.5 per cent of all the planet’s water.
It absorbs enormous quantities of heat from the Sun and redistributes that heat through powerful currents.
These currents influence rainfall, temperatures, storms, monsoons and weather systems across the world.
The Ocean also absorbs carbon dioxide, stores heat, cycles nutrients and helps maintain conditions in which life can survive.
Without it, Earth would experience far more extreme temperature changes.
The climate systems upon which agriculture, cities and civilisation depend are inseparable from the sea.
