Carrole A. M Guntley to Receive Ryerson University’s First International Alumni Award

Kingston, Jamaica: January 28, 2013…Dr. Carrole A.M. Guntley, CD is set to become the first International Alumni Awardee of the renowned Ryerson University in Canada, as the prestigious university recognizes the 2013 Alumni Achievement Awardees.

On February 13, Jamaica’s own Carrole Guntley will be recognized by Ryerson for excellence achieved in her career, while making an outstanding contribution to her profession, community and her country.   The award also recognizes Alumni who portray the strength of Ryerson’s programs that depict theory and professional practice as partners in the education process.

Carrole Guntley completed a two tier study programme at Ryerson University, having successfully completed the professional diploma in Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Administration in 1975 and then continued on to complete the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Hotel & Tourism Management in 1976.    She has since had an illustrious career in tourism as reflected in an impressive collection of national and regional awards, the most recent being the Bureau of Women’s Affairs Jamaica 50 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Tourism in 2012.    The two awards that are of particular significance to her however, are Jamaica’s national honour, the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander (CD) in 2003 and the Prime Minister’s Award for invaluable contribution to Jamaica’s Tourism in 1995.

Other awards recognizing her outstanding contributions to tourism are the Caribbean World Magazine’s Caribbean Personality of the Year in 2002 and in 1992 the Caribbean Tourism Association Award for organization and establishment of its London Office.  In 2006 Carole Guntley was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Management by Revans University, Colorado, USA where she had completed her Master of Science, Hospitality & Tourism Management (IMCA) in 2004.

Carrole Guntley has had a wide expanse of experience in the field of tourism, starting her career in the private sector as the executive sales manager at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in 1976, serving her country as the director of tourism at the Jamaica Tourism Board from 1984-1990, and moving on to a regional position from 1990 to 1992 as the European marketing manager at Caribbean Tourism Organization in their London office.   She later served as the area manager, Jamaica, St. Maarten and the Western Caribbean for BWIA International Airways from 1992-1999 before returning to public service in 1999 as the director general in the Ministry of Tourism where she currently works.

Ryerson University has been bestowing Alumni Achievement Awards since 1998, the occasion of its 50th anniversary and has since awarded a select few Alumni each year.   This year a total of eight Alumni are to be recognized by Ryerson including alumni in the fields of sports, broadcasting and interior design.
