The most colourful and vibrant summer festival of the Caribbean, Barbados’ Crop Over Festival is here!
23rd June – 6th August 2018
Visitors and locals alike are enjoying the energetic, effervescent fetes and events that are taking place on the sun kissed island of Barbados, now and over the next few weeks culminating on Monday August 6th with Grand Kadooment! The streets come alive with a myriad of colour as masqueraders are adorned with bejewelled, vivacious feathered costumes, dancing in the bands to the rhythmic sounds of Soca until the sun goes down.
Cheryl Carter, UK Director of BTMI commented “Bajan culture is all about embracing life and happiness, Crop Over is a wonderful festival where we Barbadians celebrate our heritage and gladly welcome the visitors to the island to do the same. The festival is a symbolic representation of the end of the sugar cane harvest, but it is also a beautiful homage to the vibrancy of life on our island.”
Some of the world’s biggest celebrities including Lewis Hamilton and Jordan Dunn descended upon the sun kissed island last year to join revellers in the biggest party of the year, which celebrates the end of the sugar cane harvest season.
Barbados’ own Bajan Queen Rihanna graces the festival each year with her jaw dropping outfits and bodacious presence that sets social media on fire! It was only November last year that the cultural ambassador had the road she grew up on was renamed in her honour, ‘Rihanna Drive’.
The festival is a true cultural melting pot and magical mixture of heady scents. Street food stalls offer sizzling meats on BBQs, freshly fried fish in soft tasty rolls and the hearty dish of homemade macaroni and pie, washed down with copious amounts of the islands’ sweet golden elixir, rum that permeates the air.
