When Queen Camilla was crowned at the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023, one of the world’s most famous diamonds was notably absent.

The historic Koh-i-Noor diamond, which has been part of the British Crown Jewels for generations, was not used in Queen Camilla’s crown. Instead, she wore the restored Queen Mary’s Crown, reset with several diamonds from Queen Elizabeth II’s personal collection.

The decision attracted worldwide attention because the Koh-i-Noor has long been the subject of international debate. Originating in the Indian subcontinent, the diamond has passed through the hands of several rulers over the centuries before becoming part of the British Crown Jewels in the 19th century.

India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran have all, at different times, asserted historical claims or expressed interest regarding the famous gem, making it one of the most discussed royal diamonds in the world.

By choosing a different crown, the Coronation focused attention on the historic ceremony itself while avoiding renewed controversy over one of history’s most recognisable jewels.

Whether viewed as a symbol of royal heritage, imperial history or cultural significance, the Koh-i-Noor continues to fascinate millions of people around the world and remains one of the most famous diamonds ever discovered.
